Thumb up. A hand with a raised thumb up in the USA, Russia, Great Britain is a sign of approval or some kind of positive emotional reaction: class, great. But in Greece, this is how they ask you to shut up. This gesture acquires an even sharper meaning in the countries of the Middle East: in this way, in a rude form, you can be sent to hell. It is generally believed that when we show someone a thumbs-up thumbs up as a sign of praise, we repeat another gesture of the ancient Romans - a thumb pointing up meant to spare. But this opinion is not true.
In many Asian countries, such a gesture is associated with ancient beliefs and, conversely, carries a negative connotation and is considered offensive. On the roads of Europe and America, it means hitchhiking. For divers, a thumb up means an order to ascend immediately. On the Internet, and in particular on the social networking site Facebook, the thumb up is shown as an icon and is associated with the term like; and on YouTube, individual videos can be voted positively or negatively by clicking on the thumbs or thumbs down icons respectively
