The middle finger is an indecent gesture in which the middle finger is lifted up or forward, while the other four fingers are pressed against the palm. In this case, the middle finger acts as a phallic symbol. Although the middle finger has historically symbolized the phallus, it has already lost its original meaning and is no longer perceived as something obscene, according to Ira Robbins, a law professor at the University of Washington who has studied the role of gesture in the history of criminal jurisprudence.
The gesture serves as a direct insult or a rude demand to leave alone, to get rid of (in particular, the middle finger is placed on the camera lens, demanding to stop filming). In English-speaking countries, the verbal analogue of this gesture is a swear word fuck you or a demand to fuck off. Showing the middle finger to the enemy is the most obscene and insulting gesture, understandable in all countries.
